In the first game of the NBA Playoffs Western Conference Semifinals, the Phoenix Suns defeated the San Antonio Spurs 111 - 102 at US Airways Center.
The Suns were led by Steve Nash with 33 points/10 assists and Amare Stoudemire with 23 points/13 rebounds. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili all scored in double figures for the Spurs.
Playoff tickets from this season are a collectors' item in Phoenix, as this was the last time the Suns made the NBA Playoffs. Current owner Robert Sarver has made a gazillion bad decisions and the team has suffered from his inept "leadership."
The Suns swept the rival Spurs 4-0 and advanced to take on the top seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. The Suns lost to the eventual NBA Champions, and elected to not re-sign Stoudemire and let a disgruntled GM Steve Kerr go back to the broadcast booth. It was the beginning of the end of Suns success.
The current edition of the Suns is currently the top team in the league and is returning to the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. Sarver finally got out of the way and let basketball people make the decisions, like signing Chris Paul.
