4/3/1993 KOOL Great Reunion, Phoenix Municipal Stadium, Phoenix, AZ

April 3, 1993 - Phoenix, AZ

The Valley's oldies radio station presented "The Great Reunion," a free concert of bands from the 50s and 60s on the field at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
KOOL Gold AM960 & Oldies 94.5 KOOL FM was National Oldies Station of the Year and a highly rated local station. This was their 3rd Annual Great Reunion, this year featuring Three Dog Night, The Turtles, Paul Revere & the Raiders, The Coasters, The Skyliners and The Marvelettes.
My best memory is when The Turtles took the stage. Flo & Eddie and the band took the stage rocking hard to Guns & Roses "Welcome to the Jungle." I turned to Therese to whine about the Turtles selling out, playing a current song, pandering to a younger crowd. Thirty seconds later the band abruptly stops, screeching to a halt sounding like a needle scratched across a vinyl. Flo says, "hey wait a minute, we don't play this shit," transitioning to "Happy Together" and the flower child 60s-era beats we expect from the Turtles. Their set open had fooled me hook/line/sinker.
KOOL Radio and its people have a fond space in my heart. Some of my best and koolest friends worked there back in the day. Played a lot of softball with KOOL people. Took many trips with KOOL as an advertising client. Those were some KOOL times, indeed.
