March 12, 1999 - Phoenix, AZ

The Manhattan Transfer brought its unique style of jazz vocalese to a concert in the round at Celebrity Theatre.

Comprised of two male and two female vocalists, Manhattan Transfer could sing a cappella and swing with an orchestra.  The only act to win a Grammy in both the pop and jazz categories in the same year, they had an early 80s hit with "The Boy From New York City" and also with "Birdland" and "Twilight Zone."

I took my mom and her older sister to this concert.  They were in their late 70s/early 80s and this was one of their last big nights out on the town together.  They enjoyed Manhattan Transfer, and reminisced about seeing Nat King Cole in the same theatre more than 30 years earlier.  Good memories...
